Meet Jesse

Testimonials

My growth within KING 5 is significantly in part to Jesse Wilson. Two years ago, while I was interning at KING 5, Jesse took me under his wing and personally helped me become the salesperson I am today.

As a new seller and new into the media world, I have learned that experience in the field can be the difference between a good client relationship and an excellent one. Whenever I need honest feedback or suggestions, I turn to Jesse for guidance. For example, when I have a large presentation coming up, I always ask Jesse if he will role-play the meeting out with me.

Additionally, when it comes to TV schedules, he always gives my plans a second look over to make sure they will be truly beneficial to my clients. Jesse always makes sure to remind me to connect back to the ‘why.” These moments of mentorship have been the key to my success in the field. He always leaves me with a challenge to grow. One example of this is when he challenged me too always circle back to the client’s needs when presenting. I now instinctually think about how to make meetings more personable. He treats everyone with respect and has the mantra of one team one goal. For instance, when there are big wins on the team, he is always the first person to give kudos and be happy for other’s success. He is a leader in every sense of the word paired with the unique ability to listen and understand others truly.

Jesse is influential because of his patience; he often is the last to speak. Some might be curious as to why? Jesse first listens to you to make sure your issues are addressed before giving his opinion. This has earned him the respect of our team throughout various levels of leadership. Lastly, Jesse always makes everything approachable, easy, and fun. It can be challenging to relate to new sellers, and sometimes coaches are so far away from a beginner’s perspective; they don’t know how to make it simple. One of Jesse’s most vital skills is breaking the process down in a comprehendible and approachable way. Jesse will make sure you walk away more confident and prepared than when you started. It is because of his mentorship and training; I have the confidence to build strong, lasting relationships with my clients. Always think.. WWWD, “What would Jesse Wilson do?”

Erica Reed, Account Executive, KING 5 Media Group

Jesse Wilson was my Manager at Seattle Times Media Solutions from Aug 2017 to May 2018. He managed our team to precision (helping me understand my goals, and actuals), while also helping me see the best in myself and realize my potential (as well as my desk’s potential). He is also extremely kind and is a leader/stand for personal growth and development and seeing ourselves as bigger than we currently do.

For example, a jewelry company in downtown Seattle was only buying 1 product with us. And he told me something | will never forget: “They should be spending way more money with us and you are the person to do that.” From that moment on, I was determined to sell more to them. Jesse helped me see the vision and pitch the largest proposal have ever pitched, and we sold the largest out of the 2 packages to them. And now, they are not only my biggest client account, but they have given us many positive reviews, and their business has increased by 55% because of what we have done for them.

Jesse has very high expectations of himself and he would not ask his team to do anything he would not do or has not done before which is why I greatly respect him – he is also a downright great person and has a servant leadership approach in all aspects of his life.

In fact, I was able to take the successes that I experienced with him as my manager and build upon them – a year after he left the Times (our sales cycles are 3-6 months), I had my best year ever at STMS and l was awarded the Account Executive of the Year award. Jesse was integral in helping me see the potential in myself and get onto a course of excellence and achievement which catapulted me into the exceptional results I achieved while Jesse was my manager at the Times and even after he left.

Thanks to Jesse and his belief in me, I will continue to hear his coaching in my head years later and into the future, I am sure! Thank goodness!

Carol Theresa Walter, Account Executive, The Seattle Times

I am honored to write this recommendation for Jesse Wilson. He is, by far, the most talented sales leader I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

When I think of Jesse, I think of –

  • A born leader
  • A fierce competitor
  • A mentor
  • Someone who won’t ask anyone to do anything he isn’t willing to do himself
  • Tireless
  • Fearless
  • God given talent to sell, coach and inspire others
  • Kind and compassionate
  • DRIVEN

I experienced these traits working with Jesse at both KIRO7 (where / was the digital sales manager) and Seattle Times (digital operations director). I actually recruited him to the Seattle Times. Therefore I strongly recommend Jesse Wilson for the local sales manager position. Jesse is money.

Q & A

Why did you choose your profession?

I chose to go into sales because I’m passionate about people and my community, and this profession gives me the opportunity to positively impact both. I enjoy helping businesses grow, identifying opportunities they may not see, and helping them overcome challenges that could limit their success.

I also find a lot of fulfillment in helping the people I work with grow professionally and personally. Whether it’s coaching employees, helping develop their skills, or supporting them in reaching goals that improve their lives and the lives of their families, that part of leadership is extremely rewarding to me.

What I enjoy most about sales and leadership is the combination of relationship building, strategy, problem-solving, and growth. I like identifying opportunities, preventing future roadblocks, and helping people and organizations perform at a higher level.

Who are your main influences?

In my career, one of my biggest influences was Anthony Brock at Comcast Spotlight. He recruited me back from KIRO TV and challenged me more than any leader I’ve worked for. He recognized that I was good at my job, but he also saw my long-term goals and pushed me to continue developing both my strengths and the areas I needed to improve to become a strong leader myself.

Working for him was demanding, but incredibly rewarding. He created an environment that challenged me to grow professionally and personally, and it genuinely made me look forward to going to work every day. The way he invested in people and held them accountable had a major impact on how I approach leadership today. I try to serve and develop the people I lead in the same way he did for me.

In my personal life, my greatest influence was the late Billy Robinson, a legendary figure in professional wrestling and MMA who helped train athletes like Kazushi Sakuraba and Josh Barnett. Billy took me under his wing during a major transition period in my life. I had just stepped away from working behind the camera, started competitive martial arts, and committed to improving my health.

One of Billy’s core philosophies changed my life: it’s okay to be nervous or uncertain — just start. Once you’re fully in the moment and focused on execution, fear fades because your attention shifts to performing.

I adopted that mindset into every area of my life. I began placing in grappling competitions, excelled in my first sales role, and lost 60 pounds for the first time in my life. Even today, people close to me often hear me say: “Just start. Lose yourself in the execution, and in that moment, you’ll become fearless.”

What is your greatest accomplishment?

One of my greatest professional accomplishments was during my time as a Sales Manager at KING 5. I recognized that the market was declining, client churn was increasing, and we were not developing enough new business opportunities to offset those challenges. Instead of accepting the market conditions, I challenged my supervisor to allow me to rethink how our team went to market.

I developed what we called the “Growth & Opportunity Team,” or GO Team, which shifted our focus heavily toward new account acquisition while also strategically growing existing business. We implemented higher activity standards, stronger pipeline accountability, more strategic prospecting, and a greater focus on digital and streaming revenue opportunities.

The result was approximately $2.7 million in year-over-year growth through new business acquisition, digital account growth, and strategically expanding current accounts during a down market.

What I’m most proud of is that we proved strong strategy, accountability, and execution can still create growth even in difficult market conditions.

What tools do you use?

I use a variety of technologies to help drive efficiency, organization, and revenue growth. I’m also a strong adopter of AI and believe that, when used correctly, it can make teams significantly more effective by improving research, communication, planning, and execution.

Some of the primary tools and platforms I’ve worked with include Microsoft Office, Salesforce and other CRM systems, forecasting and revenue management platforms, Seamless.AI for prospecting and lead generation, and OKTA for secure access and workflow management.

I’ve also leveraged AI tools to help streamline sales processes, improve prospecting strategy, assist with proposal development, and create more efficient workflows for teams. I enjoy learning new technologies and finding practical ways they can improve performance and decision-making.

What advice would you give to someone just starting in your profession?

The advice I would give someone just starting in sales is: start now and don’t wait. Too many people spend time overthinking, worrying about failure, or trying to be perfect before they take action. The reality is that confidence comes through execution.

Learn the process, commit to the process, and lose yourself in the execution of it. When you fully focus on preparation, effort, and execution, fear starts to disappear because your attention shifts toward performing instead of worrying.

I also believe every sales call should be approached like an athlete preparing for competition. You need to believe in yourself, believe in the value you bring, and genuinely believe the products or solutions you represent can help your clients. Confidence and energy matter in this profession. You need some swagger when you walk into the room.

At the same time, you also have to remain coachable. Even the greatest athletes in the world continue practicing, studying film, and refining their skills. Mike Phelps still had coaches. The best sales professionals are the same way — they stay competitive because they’re always learning, adapting, and improving.

That combination of confidence, preparation, humility, and continuous growth is what helps people succeed long term in this profession.
